Moxon Vise – The Screws, continued

To cut the acme threaded rod down for two screws, I clamped it in my bench vise.  I decided to thread on the two nuts, with a small gap between them, to act as a guide.  Hopefully that would keep me sawing relatively straight.  I started with the jigsaw, but progress was slow, and even with stopping to drip oil into the cut, smoke was curling up and the steel was quite warm.  There was a point at which it just didn’t want to cut any further.  So I switched to the hacksaw, which was even slower, but finished the job.

For the second operation, I decided to try my cheap angle grinder.  This was faster, but I found it difficult to control.  I still finished with the hacksaw.  Then I scrubbed each screw and nut with a wire brush and Simple Green to get rid of the filings, oil, and grime.

I mixed up some epoxy and applied it liberally to the screws where they would fit into the handles.  I brushed and wiped off the excess that oozed out as best I could, and let them sit up overnight.  After a little fussing getting the blue tape off, they were ready to go.
