Lake Quinault Lodge, Washington

2013.09.08

We awoke to gray skies at Ocean Shores, but after driving back to Lake Quinault, it was mostly sunny.  Our decision to reschedule the trip gave us good weather for this, our main trail day.  Our first stop was to see the historic lodge.

In 1903, a “log hotel” was built on the lakeshore.  After it burned in 1924, a new lodge was designed by architect Robert Reamer in the same rustic style as his Old Faithful Inn at Yellowstone.  The building was completed in just 53 days, and opened in the summer of 1926.  President Franklin Roosevelt visited the lodge in 1937, and the following year signed the bill to create Olympic National Park.
