Coos Bay
Coos Bay is a nice little coastal town. After getting some gas, I found a local seafood place. The restaurant wasn’t fancy or anything, but the grilled halibut was pretty good. Then I spent some time along the Boardwalk.
On my way out of town, I saw a big ship at dock, so I got out to finish the roll of film. I’ve always been fascinated with large ships, especially container ships, and photograph them when I get the opportunity. This one was a bulk cargo carrier, but it would have to do. The Copihue is owned by the Japanese corporation Daio, but registered in the Phillipines.
Coos Bay to Florence
I left Coos Bay around 19:15 (7:15 pm) and headed up US-101 to Florence. On previous excursions, Reedsport was the furthest south along the coast I had been, about halfway between Coos Bay and Florence. I had expected to see a lot more of the southern coast this day, but there was that three-hour mistake in the mountains…
Florence to Portland
At Florence I turned inland on OR-126 to Eugene, and caught I-5 northbound to head home. It was already dark before I hit Eugene. Just north of Eugene along I-5, they were harvesting wheat or alfalfa or something, I’m not sure what, but my car smelled like mowing the lawn times ten. I was glad when I finally got out of range of that.
The final leg was nothing special, I’ve done this stretch of I-5 many times, and there’s little to see in the dark anyway. I rolled into my apartment complex at 23:00 (11:00 pm) and hauled myself and my gear upstairs.
All in all I drove about 1460 miles in three days, averaging 45 mph. I shot 120 pictures, most of which you see here. And I put my 13-year-old car one step closer to the grave.
