Bark Mulch for the West Garden

2006.08.12

I borrowed Nate and his truck to pick up a cubic yard of hemlock bark mulch from American Compost & Recycling.

You may have noticed another plant in the background.  That would be a Foxglove ‘Camelot Lavender’, a biennial.  I debated planting it here, because the tag said part sun.  Well… by the next day, it had keeled over and the leaves were turning brown.  So much for that bad idea.  I pulled it out (very easily) and tossed it on the “dead weeds and dirt” pile.  Perhaps it’s just as well; all parts of the plant are extremely toxic if eaten, with potentially fatal results.  But it’s so pretty…

Anyway, today after work I spread out the bark mulch.  Besides looking nicer than the landscaping fabric, the bark mulch keeps the sun off the fabric (slowing the degradation process), holds moisture, and along with the fabric helps suppress weeds.

Well, I need to add more plants to fill in the rest of the space, along with waiting for these to grow larger.  I’d also like to create tidy edges with pavers or something.  But all that can wait.
