Cleaning out Trench Drain at Garage
2006.09.03
In front of my garage there is a trench drain with slotted metal covers. Today I set about taking the covers off and cleaning out the drain. I could see that it had filled up with silt and debris, and during heavy rains, didn’t seem to be very effective at all.
The covers are held on with bolts, so I used a socket wrench and a prybar to take one off. Oh yeah… that’s a problem.
I continued taking the rest of the cover sections off, and then set about scooping out the fill.
After I had the drain cleared out, I could see a pipe at one end continuing under the driveway. But where does it lead to? Hmmm. I did some exploratory digging in the yard on the other side of the concrete… but after digging down 18 inches or so, I had hit nothing. Either the pipe takes a dive, makes a turn, or it just ends under the driveway somewhere. Probably it goes down deeper and ends up right next to the corner of my basement, where all the water came in during heavy rains last winter…
