Basement Stair Guardrail

One of the items on my buyers’ repair addendum was building a guardrail for the basement stairs.  There’s a wall on one side, with a handrail, but the other side is open.  I got the impression that they aren’t really that concerned about the safety issue, they were just worried the appraisal might not go through without it.

Nate came over today to help me carry some heavy boxes out of the basement, but also helped me install the guardrail post and rail.  I used four six-inch lag screws to secure the post to the stairs, and a couple shorter ones for the rail to the post.  It’s not going anywhere.
