Fence Extension Near Garage

2007.07.04

The back fence stops short of the garage, although a chainlink fence (which I assume belongs to the apartment complex behind me) continues on.  There used to be a section that angled from this last post over to the corner of the garage.  I tore that down last summer to clear out the jungle of blackberry vines.

I have been planning for a while to build another section of wood fence, mainly to block line-of-sight from the apartments, and also to cover up the worst-looking part of the chain link fence.  (Especially after Nate ran into it with the stump grinder…)

So, I started digging a hole for a new post.  Of course, first I had to dig out the pile of broken roof shingles…

I set the post in and used some wood stakes as shims to get it level and plumb.  After that looked good, I drove a couple stakes into the ground at an angle, and screwed them into the post to hold it in place.

I mixed up a bag of concrete and poured the footing.

After work this evening I finished the new fence section.  I attached some metal brackets to the posts to hold the rails, then cut a couple 2x4’s for the rails and screwed those in place.  I had the lower rail halfway attached when I realized I’d put one bracket down too low, so I had to fix that.

Then I started putting up the fence boards.  When I got down to the end, I needed to rip one down narrower.  Er, how do people usually do this?  I just drew a pencil line, clamped the board to my sawhorses, and tried to follow the line as best I could with the circular saw.  Hm, not bad for freehand.  That was my last fence board, too, just enough to get the job done.

Well, there it is.  Not very exciting, but it looks better than the chainlink, that’s for sure.
